You can use adjustment layers to do all kinds of experimenting and not one pixel will be damaged. There are ways to do this and they are not time consuming or difficult to learn.

Sometimes you may use Photoshop to do some magic pixel manipulation but other times you may just want to make a few small changes.

What about the times when you just want to make a minor change to an image’s color balance? Maybe you have had occasion to tweak a contrast balance to achieve a print that is more pleasing to look at.

You can do this by learning how to take control over the way in which you adjust the image. It’s a good thing to be able to try various things in the adjustment department while being able to go back and retrace your steps if you encounter a problem. Smart layering allows you the ability to do these things.

As you may already know, undoing steps is not difficult. You use the [Ctrl]/[Command]+[Z] and can move back through stored history using [Shift]+[Ctrl]+[Z].

You can also use adjustment layers to do this and you will also be able to have instant access to the original file in its untouched state.

Adjustment layers give you the opportunity to make changes to a single layer without changing any of the pixels on the layer itself. This is such a great way to work because you don’t have to be concerned about altering the image permanently.

When you find that you want to undo an adjustment layer you can simply drag it to the trash can that is located in the Layer palette. Another way to undo an adjustment layer is to turn it off using the eye icon.

When you want to add an adjustment layer quickly, the best way to do it is to click on the shortcut option that is located at the foot of the Layers palette. You can also go to the Layer>New Adjustment Layer in the main menu.

If you use the Lasso Tool when making a selection on your original layer, any adjustment layers you design will only affect the selected area. A mask protects the unselected parts of an image on each new adjustment layer.

You can build your image adjustments effectively and slowly if you combine the effects of multiple adjustment layers. You also have the option of turning them off and on when you are ready to fine-tune the overall effect.

Use the thumbnail icons to quickly identify your adjustment layers. These thumbnail icons are attached to the corresponding layer and they are labeled so you can see which layer applies which effect.

There are several ways you can make your Photoshop work more effective when you are using the Brush Tool. As you have seen, there are a variety of ways to boost the power of the Brush Tool. You can make your creative work even more exciting. Some of these ways involve plugging in a stylus. The stylus allows the user to be even more creative and also to have interactive control over several different brush options like opacity and size.

If you don’t have a stylus and the control it allows you when re-sizing a brush tip there is another way to go. You can make use of a keyboard shortcut by using your mouse to apply the brush.

In this way you can interactively change the brush size by pressing the [ key to shrink the brush’s diameter. If you use the ] key, you can increase the brush’s diameter.

Here are a few other ways to use the Brush Preset picker:

Use the up and down keys to scroll through the list of brushes. This will give you an idea of what choices you have.

If you want a completely new brush tip you can combine two different brushes and you will have something new. If you want to try this you can go to the Brushes palette and click on the Dual Brush option.

At this point you can add a second brush choice from the Brush Preset picker and this will give you an entirely different brush.

You can also design a calligraphy kind of brush tip. This is not difficult to achieve either and gives you a completely different look which is perfect for certain projects. Start with the Brushes palette and click on the Brush Tip Shape option.

Now you can compress the circular brush tip’s Roundness setting and your brush tip will become more of an elliptical shape. The Angle setting can also be adjusted using the Brush Preset picker. When you want to do this you can use the up and down arrow keys to scroll through the brush choices.

If you want to change the softness and hardness value of a brush, it can be done easily. You just hold down the [Shift] and use the square bracket keys.

Basic Photoshop Tutorials using the Eraser Tool

Have an object with edges you want to isolate? This is one way to use the Background Eraser tool.

The Magic Eraser is often used to blast large areas that contain unwanted pixels. It certainly can be effective if you want to get fast results, but it is less than subtle. This works well when you want to eliminate big areas of color that you don’t need. It is not always as useful when you are working with areas that are more intricate.

This is one of the reasons that Photoshop is so great. This program provides the user with lots of selection tool choices. Each tool has its own options that can be
customized.

Now, there are some kinds of selection jobs that work better with the Background Eraser than with the actual Magic Eraser.

The Background Eraser is more versatile and gives you greater control over some of the more difficult tasks. For instance, if you are selecting intricately shaped objects, the Background Eraser may be the tool for the job.

Let’s say you want to isolate your image in your picture by removing the sky. The sky consists of edges that may prove difficult to work with. Remove the sky along with the detailed edges using the Background Eraser tool.

Some selection tools would not be able to handle the job because of the position of the crenulations and the arches of the towers. This makes it very tricky when you want to try to remove the sky that is hidden among all of that other stuff.

Here is the way that you can work with the Background Eraser tool to accomplish the above task. You can cut out the complex shapes easily using the Background Eraser. Now you may need to spend a little time fiddling with the options to get the most use of the tool when you are working on a complex project such as this one.

Begin by selecting the tool from the toolbox and in the options bar you will want to set the Sampling option to Once. Sample a section of the blue sky by clicking and the
background swatch icon will change color.

This lets you know the pixels that are headed for deletion. If you hold the mouse button down and spray the eraser’s brush around the image you will be able to get rid of all the pixels of the same color.

Pixels of other colors will not be removed as you spray around the edge of the building. If you want the best results you can tweak the Tolerance setting.
